How air conditioning works

Air conditioning doesn't produce heat, it moves it. That's why it cools in summer and heats in winter.

How it works

Air conditioning doesn't produce heat, it moves it. In summer it carries heat out of the room; in winter it takes heat from the outdoor air and brings it inside.

Diagram: heat transfer between the indoor and outdoor unitInsideOutsideIndoor unitcool airwarm airheatOutdoor unit

The indoor unit absorbs heat from the room air. The refrigerant carries it outside through the pipes, and the outdoor unit releases it into the surroundings.

The outdoor unit takes heat even from cold outdoor air. The refrigerant carries it inside, and the indoor unit warms the room.

Air-to-air heat pump

Air conditioning with a heating function is an air-to-air heat pump. From one kilowatt-hour of electricity it delivers several times as much heat. Exactly how much depends on the model and the outdoor temperature.

Inverter

The compressor doesn't switch fully on and off. It raises and lowers its output smoothly, so it holds the temperature, saves energy and runs more quietly.

Split or multi-split?

Split: one outdoor and one indoor unit. Multi-split: we connect two to five indoor units to one outdoor unit, and each room has its own temperature.

Unit types and mounting

We choose the indoor unit to suit the room, and place the outdoor unit where it will be safe, quiet and easy to reach for servicing.

Frequently asked questions

Can air conditioning heat in winter too?

Yes. Air conditioning with a heating function is an air-to-air heat pump, and it heats even when it's freezing. Down to what outdoor temperature and at what output depends on the model. At the site survey we'll recommend a unit that can handle it.

Will it blow at me?

We position the unit so the airflow isn't aimed at a bed, sofa or desk. You can also set the direction and speed of the air on the remote control.

How noisy is it?

At low output the indoor unit is very quiet; in a bedroom you usually won't hear it at all. We position the outdoor unit so it doesn't disturb you or your neighbours.

Where does the condensate go?

Water from the indoor unit drains through a small hose outside or into a waste pipe. Where it can't drain by gravity, we use a small condensate pump. We'll propose a solution at the site survey.

Photos (optional)

A photo of the wall where you want the unit and of the spot outside is enough. For a service, photograph the unit's rating plate.

A phone number or an e-mail is enough.
